Resumen: 

Los túneles del Payares reflejan múltiples aspectos del patrimonio cultural asturiano; entre ellos el de la tradición oral y toponímica. Los nombres originales de estos parajes se conservan en la memoria imprescindible de los pueblos que siempre vivieron, de forma más o menos directa o indirecta, la actividad de los trenes: hombres, mujeres y familias enteras, que completaban aquellas precarias economías agrícolas y ganaderas con un sueldo ferroviario. Los nombres de los túneles atestiguan, por tanto, todo un léxico toponímico recogido directamente de los lugareños que trabajaron en la RENFE. A veces hay algunas variantes respecto a la nomenclatura ferroviaria oficial. De ahí, la importancia lingüística –el documento– de los nativos, una vez más, frente a los nombres impuestos por extraños de paso sin relación alguna con el terreno, tantas veces.

Abstract:

The Payares tunnels reflect many aspects of the Asturian cultural heritage, including oral and toponymic tradition. The original names of these places have been preserved in the essential memory of the people who have always lived related, more or less directly or indirectly, to the activity of the trains: men, women and entire families, who supplemented their precarious economies based on agriculture and livestock farming with a railway salary. The names of the tunnels bear witness, therefore, to a toponymic lexicon that has been collected directly from the locals who worked for RENFE (railway company). Sometimes there are some variations on the official railway nomenclature. Hence, the linguistic importance – the document– of the natives, once again, as opposed to the names imposed by passing strangers with no relation to the terrain.
