Resumen: 

El Puerto de Pajares representó una de las más importantes obras de ingeniería ferroviaria de toda Europa. Los avatares de la larga gestación de este tramo y el complejo proceso de construcción de la línea han sido objeto de diferentes investigaciones que, poco a poco, van revelando muchos detalles de interés. Sin embargo, aún se ha divulgado poco el trabajo en La Rampa en sus primeros años. Una sección ferroviaria tan dura, con más línea en subterráneo que al aire libre, con pronunciadísimas rampas y curvas cerradas, representaba un enorme desafío para el personal de los trenes, en un tiempo en que el vapor era la única fuerza motriz disponible y el sacrificio humano el pago que la modernidad demandaba para romper el secular aislamiento de Asturias.

Abstract:

The Pajares Pass represented one of the most important railway engineering works in Europe. The ups and downs of the long gestation of this section and the complex process of
construction of the line have been the subject of different investigations that, little by little, reveal many interesting details. However, the work at La Rampa in its early years has still been little reported. Such a harsh railway section, with more underground line than open-air, with steep ramps and sharp turns, represented a huge challenge for train staff, at a time when steam was the only available driving force and the human sacrifice was the payment that modernity demanded to break the secular isolation of Asturias.
